Saints win Super Bowl. Enter the Peyton Manning face. It has been a while, but it still lives.

Before you scoff at that oversimplification, know this - it is what wins big games against good coaches and, more importantly, few teams do it well. Look no further than the AFC Championship game. Jets getting pressure on Manning with their base 3-4 and his max-protect two TE set. Manning switches to their standard 3 WR package and Rex Ryan counters with a dime. Game over. No more pressure and the DBs can't cover the WRs forever. Jets never readjusted. End of story.
In this game, the first quarter was all Colts. The Saints quickly realized a few things:
- It is true you cannot bring the house against Manning. He finds the open guy too quickly. The Colts scored with ease.
- Freeney and Mathis are faster than anyone on your scout team. You can't simulate that and deep drops will only result in pain and failure; and sacks.
Now where most team fail at counter moves, the Saints performed flawlessly:
- They went to a nickel and played mostly coverage with the occassion odd blitzer but nothing crazy. When you are blitzing a ton, often someone is running wide open. The Saints did not let that happen. By often dropping 7 in coverage, every throw was contested and they forced Manning to be perfect every time. Many times, Manning was absolutely perfect. A few times he wasn't. And the games are won and lost on a few key plays.
- Pass rushers are useless if the ball is gone. Brees used almost exclusively three step drops after the first quarter. The reason most teams cannot do that against the Colts is they dont have enough weapons. The Saints do.
Big Balls Payton
1. That onside kick was crazy. I still can't believe they did it. I still can't believe it worked. I really can't believe that Mr. Kendra Wilkinson took it off the face to bounce it back to the Saints.And I do not even want to imagine what was going on at the bottom of that pile. Bad things, man. Bad things.
2. Going for it on 4th and Goal at the 1 is a no-brainer. Never question that decision. The play call on the other hand was awful. You cannot run outside on a speed-centric Cover 2 defense. It is a fact. You run over lighter, faster teams. So, great decision yet terrible play but huge cojones regardless.
Peyton being Peyton
Fantasy nerds will call him the greatest ever because he will end with every passing record. But that is like saying Karl Malone is better than Michael Jordan, because he scored more career points. (Didn't know that, did you? Look it up. Kareem then Mailman then Jordan.)
I like the Karl Malone analogy a lot since, much like Manning, he put up absurd numbers for his entire career on great teams yet never played his best in the biggest games.
And honestly, Peyton Manning bested Rex Grossman in his lone Super Bowl appearance. Um, asterisk anyone?

Reggie Bush did not have any meaningful touches in the game. That is a positive for the Saints. He is a track star, not a football player. He has a great reality show career ahead of him, just not a long NFL career. It is a short trip, Reggie, save some money.
Kickers FTW
You cannot say enough about Saints kicker Garrett Hartley. In a bizarre season for kickers, where EVERYONE (Nate Kaeding?!) routinely missed chipshot field goals all year long, Hartley nailed three 40+ FGs. In my opinion, he was the MVP.
